The Polish presidency of the EU Council of Ministers will address the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council tomorrow (Monday, January 27) .
At the meeting in Brussels, the Polish representatives will give a public presentation of its work programme, and also outline their main priorities in the field of agriculture and fisheries.
The presidency of the council rotates among EU member states every six months. The Polish presidency began on January 1, and will run until June 30.
In relation to the agriculture sector, Poland has outlined that its main priority is to "greatly contribute to determining the shape of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) after 2027".
The presidency will hold a policy debate on the vision for agriculture and food, which was announced by the EU Commission last year. The debate will focus on food security, and ways to stabalise farmers' incomes.
Another aim of the Polish presidency, is to implement a "rural proofing principle". This principle is designed to check what impact other EU policies have on rural development, and to get recommendations from the Commission for action in the multiannual financial framework.
This framework is dedicated to long term investment within the EU.
Throughout their term, Poland has promised to hold debates on "the state of affairs in the area of international trade in agricultural products".
By doing this they hope to create an EU trade policy that takes into consideration the strategic and practical interests of European agriculture. Their priority is to "strengthen the position of farmers in the food supply chain".
Poland is also planning to hold a discussion on how EU countries are eliminating unfair practices in the food supply chain.
On animal welfare, they are going to revise the current animal welfare legislation, particularly the protection of animals during transport with the view to harmonise EU practices and improve law enforcement.
Poland has also promised to take action to "ensure the sustainability and resilience of Europe's forests". They plan to do this by working on draft regulations to protect forests and by preparing the EU for the United Nations forum on forests.
Finally, in fisheries the presidency will negotiate amendments to the fishing opportunities for 2025 in the Atlantic Ocean. It will also negotiate with the United Kingdom on stocks for the first half of the year.
