Aspiring organic growers have the opportunity to kickstart a career in organic farming, with the Organic Growers of Ireland (OGI) internship programme for 2025.

This work placement initiative is designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to thrive in the expanding organic farming sector.

With Europe targeting a 25% increase in organic agriculture by 2030, the OGI believes “there has never been a better time to consider a career in organic farming”.

The OGI’s programme offers a six-to-nine-month paid work placement on some of Ireland’s leading organic farms.

Participants in the programme will gain real-world experience, and work a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Students will develop essential skills like soil health management, crop propagation, pest control, and machinery operation.

The programme also includes workshops led by organic horticulture experts like renowned market gardener, Jim Cronin, Klaus Laitenberger, and Dave Beecher.

Beyond hands-on farm work, interns will participate in engaging farm walks, classes, and workshops.

Coordinator of the programme, Una Wycherley said: “With supports for organic growers significantly increased under the new National Organic Strategy, and consumer demand for sustainable produce at an all-time high, the opportunities in this sector are immense.”

Upon completion of the internship, participants will receive a QQI Level 5 qualification in Organic Principles and Standards,

The qualification is essential for accessing department funding when transitioning to organic farming and horticulture.

The programme facilitates an opportunity for interns to liaise with growers and experts, fostering beneficial relationships and industry contacts.

Past participant Louise Rankin, who made the move to organic farming, said: “The connections I made through this programme have been invaluable.”

The programme welcomes applicants from all walks of life, whether transitioning family farms to organic practices or making bold career changes.

Applications for the internship are open until Saturday, February 15.
